IFORED, an international team responsible for the testing, choosing and commercializing the red flesh apples varieties, has initiated plans to produce red-flesh apples.

North America in the IFORED is represented by Next Big Thing which is consists of about 45 US and Canadian growers.

Next Best Thing president Tim Byrne said that 85-90% of their growers will grow red-fleshed varieties, which are expected to be in the market in four or five years.

The red-flesh apple varieties will have flesh colors ranging from 30% pink to full red and the skin colors include red, orange, yellow and bi-colored, reported thepacker.com.

The varieties which will go into production have been chosen for their low astringency, large size, increased sugar content, more uniform appearance and improved internal quality, storage and shelf-life.
